Why being a generalist is a superpower in 2024

I wish we talked about this more! Why are we told to diversify our investments but not our careers? Why are we seeing hundreds and thousands of people being pushed out of jobs and professions they worked towards their entire lives? BECAUSE we are told that we should focus, we should specialise, we should progress in this one thing. I could not disagree more. Please stop putting all your eggs in...

Thank you for this! Very insightful and inspiring!
Thanks so much for watching!
Accurate! There is always something more to do and guilt of not doing EVERYTHING! Love this short!!
Thanks u dear for this 💕😘
WHAAAT! This is the best cross-over since I saw 3 spiderman in the same movie! Thanks for this!
Too kind 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The collaboration we needed! Thanks ladies.
Thanks for talking through this! My perspective is that the gradient of skills that are necessary to build a good product was previously boxed into 3 simplified boxes of Product, Engineering, and Design. Even if one of those "titles" disappear, the responsibilities would still be necessary to build a product. (just because you erase the box line doesn't mean the skills are no longer necessary) Find the core responsibilities/skills that you are good at and enjoy doing and find whatever title aligns with those skills. Cheers
This was SO fun!!!! Love that we've gone from mutual fans to friends 💕 Excited to share part two!!!
The collaboration I didn’t know I needed. Excited to watch this! 💃🏾
We didn’t know we needed it either 🤣

Anika no one is hiring 😭 they’re putting up job posts because they have to
Yes, I know. Entire point of this video is so we can get to a point where we don’t have to rely on them hiring or not!m. Long term game, small incremental steps but it’s a prime example of why we need to build our portfolios because companies have all the leverage.
It’s not cloning
12 years of experience with a masters degree, half of my experience is in cybersecurity cant get a PM job at literally any company, even when I try to drop down from director into Sr PM dozens of interviews, 6 final rounds, no or ambiguous feedback and they dont actually end up hiring someone for the role... no one is actually hiring, they promote some poor Sr Pm with 4 years of experience into a director and tell them they have 3 products instead of one now, pat them on the back and tell them good luck thats the only real explanation i can think of as to why i have NEVER been to a final round interview and didnt get an offer.... and now i have have 6 in the last 4 months and not a single offer
While I haven’t actively looked or applied anywhere myself in a long time, I am hearing this everywhere. It is certainly an extremely tough time right now so if you can built alternative skill sets while you keep looking, hopefully it may help in the long term. Exactly why I wanted to make this video because the reliance we have on companies and employers is too great - and in 2024, we are really seeing that power play for those who don’t have an alternative income stream or skill set. Wishing you all the best
Thank you Anika for sharing this inspiring advice ❤
Thanks Anika! I keep coming back to the video. Really really insightful!
I love the idea of a career portfolio! As a structural engineer who took a product management bootcamp, I'm inspired to explore this career path. It's a big shift tho, a big disadvantage is that my experience won't directly transfer.
You can diversify over time, in small incremental ways! The entire point being to counter your ‘disadvantage’
Great info Anika!
Well said 👏
amazing video as usual <3
Found this video after 2years and it solved my beginner’s curiosity issues! Thanks Anika 🤗

Hello, Anika Could you please advise me a program for illustrating as yours? Thank you! It was the best video I ever found
Sure thing! I am using Procreate with an ipad and apple pencil :)
Anika, you create some of the most useful PM videos out there and your insights are very valuable!! Thank you for your vulnerability and kindness to share your process and knowledge ❤
Thank you so much, this is why I make videos. Appreciate your comment and time for watching 💕
Anika, thanks for the video…could you please try making a technology side video on Product Owner… like how much should they be aware of tech while creating Epics and User stories .. and how they need to coordinate with Tech team to bring their inputs in creating the product work set?
I hear you, this mindset is to avoid burnout & pressure/anxiety. But a side hustle that’s not for money is just a hobby. People who are broke want side hustles because their job doesn’t pay enough or they hate it. If you love your job, do a side hustle that helps you learn skills to be more valuable to the job so they pay you more.
Hello Anika. Can you help with a roadmap to learning product marketing management or boot camp or courses

I might have missed but I think you forgot a very important ceremony/practice (Defect Triage Meeting) which i'm presuming should be part of the (Tactical) work
Interesting! I think everyone company and team probably runs a bit differently as my teams have never run a dedicated meeting to triage defects, but totally up to you and your team/product. We did these things asynchronously

Leaving my small tech company after ten years. 20 years TOTAL with this team across three different companies. I was a big fish in a small pond and we developed a short-hand "teach ourselves as we go" internal culture since 2003. We were doing group meetings and all talking daily - very small, not a lot of formal processes. Coming into the job market now I feel like im walking out of a cave into blinding sunlight, and am intimidated by the evolution of PM and Product Development, I dont understand or know the formal processes and feel like a fish out of water. I watched your "What does a product manager do" video and it was helpful because it was an exploded view of a lot of our shorthang, but I still feel frozen in amber and have a lot of catching up to do if I want to remain competitive and valuable to newer, younger companies and startups. The language I was speaking does not translate. Any advice or resources you could point me in the direction of, I would appreciate so much. Love your channel and subscribed.
This is a truly great video! I love how well you covered key topics in an informative way. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
